One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
