A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The motive behind the shooting is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, according to authorities.

Details of the Attack

Authorities indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a premises close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," an official report stated.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but collapsed across the street.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the incident.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Authorities have requested members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.

"Words fail me. I am shattered," she said.
