The English seamer added to England's injury problems after leaving the ground early on day two of the Boxing Day Test against Australia. The right-arm seamer felt a problem in his hamstring after the final ball of the fourth over at the MCG. Team management stated Atkinson felt some "soreness" and would spend time off the field for further assessment "during the day". The final Test of the tour at the SCG begins on Sunday, 4 January. England have previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood due to knee trouble and another paceman to a side strain on this Ashes tour. Matthew Fisher was brought into the squad as injury reinforcement. Atkinson struggled early in the series, claiming a mere a handful of scalps. He was dropped for the Adelaide match, before being recalled for the fourth Test to fill the void. Atkinson improved at the MCG, bagging two scalps with the ball, before adding 28 while batting being one of only three England players who passed ten runs. Following a brief spell in Australia's second innings, he came back on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper. Unfortunately, towards the conclusion of his spell, he delivered a variation to the batsman and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring. The English bowler was recalled for the Boxing Day Test having missed of the third.
